An Austrian museum is to pay 15 million euro to the heirs of a Jewish collector for a painting by Egon Schiele. The announcement by Vienna’s Leopold Museum closes a long-running legal case. The painting, ‘Portrait of Wally’ from 1912, was impounded in 1998 in New York while it was on loan to the Museum of Modern Art because the heirs argued that the owner had been forced to sell it at a knock-down price to a Nazi art collector to escape persecution.
