FIRES IN RUSSIA REACH CHERNOBYL REGION

The widespread fires hit the Bryansk region, already affected by radiation from Chernobyl, on August 6. The Russian National Observatory reported 28 fires in an area of 269 hectares. Greenpeace warned yesterday of the possibility that smoke could carry radioactive particles. The government says it never hid any information from the public. “Why deny it?” said an observatory spokesman, “Anyone can buy a map of the contaminated area and the area affected by the fires.”
