GERMAN ARMY TO BECOME ALL-VOLUNTEER FORCE

The German Army is about to become an all-volunteer, professional force, abolishing conscription. The daily newspaper, the’ Suddeutsche Zeitung’ reported plans today by Defense Minister, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg (CSU), according to which the Bundeswehr will be made up of 165,000 volunteers. Currently the army is 250,000 strong, 187,000 of whom are volunteers, 35,000 conscripts and a further 28,000 long serving conscripts.
