– Nicolas Sarkozy has confirmed the death of the Frenchman taken hostage by al-Qaeda: “They will be punished”. The French aid-worker, Michel Germaneau aged 78, was kidnapped on 19th April last by the organisation’s affiliate in the Islamic Magreb (AQMI) and killed in retaliation for the failed desert raid by Mauritanian and French troops. “Dear fellow-countrymen this crime against Michel Germaneau will not go unpunished”, said the French President.
