The Pope has approved the laws on sexual abuse to speed up trials and declared child pornography a crime. In particular, there are faster procedures for tackling the most urgent and serious situations more effectively, and allowance for the inclusion of lay people in the courts: they are raising the duration of barring from ten to twenty years, equating abuse against people with limited mental capacity to that against minors. Legislation on trial confidentiality is being put forward again, to protect the dignity of all those involved, but there remains a duty to report to the authorities where provided for under civil law. Among the most serious crimes, there is “the attempted ordination of women”.
