ZANZIBAR: AD HOC TRIBUNALS FOR SAFEGUARDING MINORS’ RIGHTS

Ad hoc tribunals are to be set up in the autonomous province of Zanzibal for the safeguarding of minors’ rights. The creation of dedicated tribunals for one of the most vulnerable strands of the population is provided for in a law that has just been approved by the Regional Assembly, which also sets out harsh punishments for those who involve minors in prostitution or force them do particularly hard work, in agriculture or in the mines, for example. Furthermore, minors are to be banned from nightclubs, from purchasing cigarettes and working in bars or other social meeting places, while owners of internet cafes have a duty to prevent children from accessing adult-only websites.
