Rustin Cohle – La gente la fuori… Non sembra neanche sapere che il resto del mondo esiste. Potrebbero anche vivere sulla fottuta Luna.
Martin Hart – Il mondo è pieno di ghetti di tutti i tipi.
Rustin – Invece è tutto un unico ghetto, amico, un mucchio di spazzatura vagante.

Rustin – Io mi considero un realista, ok? Ma in termini filosofici sono quello che si dice un pessimista
Hart – Che significa?
Rustin – Significa che non sono buono per i party.
Hart – Fattelo dire: non te la cavi un granché neanche fuori dai party.
Rustin – Io penso che la coscienza umana sia stato un tragico errore dell’evoluzione. Siamo diventati troppo consapevoli di noi stessi. La natura ha creato un proprio aspetto che è diventato indipendente da essa. Siamo creature che non dovrebbero esistere, secondo la legge naturale.
Hart – Sembra proprio una bella stronzata, Rust.
Rustin – Siamo dei semplici oggetti che si affannano inseguendo l’illusione di avere una personalità.
Quest’accrescimento dell’esperienza sensoriale e dei sentimenti, programmato con la totale sicurezza che siamo qualcuno, quando in realtà tutti noi non siamo nessuno.
Hart – Non andrei in giro a dire queste stronzate, fossi in te.
Rustin – Credo che la cosa giusta da fare per la specie sia negare quello per cui siamo stati programmati: smettere di riprodurci, andare incontro lentamente all’estinzione.
Un’ultima notte insieme come fratelli e sorelle e poi chiamarsi fuori da questo mondo così ingiusto.
Hart – Quindi perché alzarsi dal letto la mattina?
Rustin – Dico a me stesso che sono un testimone. Ma la vera risposta è che, a quanto pare, è quello per cui sono stato programmato. E mi manca il coraggio di suicidarmi.

I think the honorable thing for our species to do is to deny our programming. Stop reproducing. Walk hand in hand into extinction. One last midnight, brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal.
