APPEAL TO ‘SAVE’ ANCESTRAL FISHERMEN’S RITE
Mali has renewed an appeal to save the ‘Sankemon’ rite during Mali’s “Cultural Week”. That yearly event, attracting thousands of visitors from Mali and bordering countries was the perfect venue for publicizing the ‘Sankemon’, a collective fishing ceremony practiced in the pond near Sanke’, Mali. It celebrates the foundation of the city of San, and has been practiced since the 15th century.
