D.R. CONGO: UN OFFICIAL ADMITS PEACEKEEPERS HAVE FAILED

A senior UN official admitted that peacekeepers had failed to prevent mass rape in eastern DR Congo. Atul Khare, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping, criticised the UN mission in the region, where over the last two months, more than 500 people (women and children) have been raped by armed groups, who are fighting for control of the gold and mineral rich region.
