Standing at over 548,000 tonnes, Kenya’s sugar production in 2009 was the highest ever recorded. The record year meant a 15 percent cut in imports, equal to 184,000 tonnes. 2009’s figures were the result of a 9.8% increase in sugar cane production, a rise from 5.1 million tonnes in 2008 to 5.6 million the following year.
